See Things Differently, Nicola Anthony (2021) Images: Nicola Anthony, Chandan Sojitra

Data, Science, Creativity and compassion

Materials: Found objects including ghost nets and reclaimed steel wire, with ink and paper, and fibre optic lights.

Size: 295cm L x 160cm W x 185cm H

The sculpture is created from suspended fragments of found and recycled materials. The ‘sands of time’ within it pulsed in relation to the live global dialogue on hashtag #COP26.

The found materials have been collected from UK and Dubai beaches, with thanks to Companies For Good who helped Nicola gather ghost nets and beach refuse in Dubai. The fibre optics and control system are supplied and commissioned by Scientechnic Lighting Solutions in partnership with Fibre Pros.

Nicola explains:

“whilst the outside of the artwork shows the materials that human beings create - and the tangle that it leaves us in - inside the artwork is a potential solution: found in data, in science, in creativity and compassion. From this perspective we can see that every individual voice is important.

Viewed from another angle, there is a hidden form of the globe in the artwork which highlights the power that comes in collaborating as one world to ensure a safe future for the Earth. I use the hourglass shape to symbolise important moments and turning points, the connection between present and future actions, and the virtuous or vicious cycles that we find ourselves in.”
