These artworks feature 3 dimensional starling birds which contain words instead of wings.

This series began when Nicola installed a 15 metre installation of life sized starlings as a permanent sculpture in Ireland. More recently she was commissioned to make a large scale version in Stainless steel for the collection of University of Galway. These smaller pieces have come a year later after much demand from people who wanted to take home one of the birds for themselves!

The public sculpture is about the experience of migration, and these framed miniature birds take words of hope and courage that have since been shared by people who have made incredible journeys in their lives, who became part of a dialogue in response to the large sculpture. This artwork pictured features the words '“Let your heart be filled“.

The bird forms are based on the starling, and the artwork also comes out of research around emergent behaviours in humans - the way we all act as a whole in a crowd or a community, knowing instinctively where to step and how to move, similar to a murmuration of starlings. Conversely this series of works has found an interesting contrast this year at a time when crowds and gatherings are banned, and passing each other in the street has become an awkward and non-instinctive act of social distancing.
